Cell Phone and Mobile Internet Providers

  • The Source in Masset (North Coast Supply) is a good place to go first for information on cell and mobile Internet options in Haida Gwaii. (Dec. 2015)
  • For many island residents, mobile Internet is the best option for reliable high speed Internet (beats satellite options in terms of speed, value, and reliability), although this option isn't meant for streaming videos and other high-bandwidth uses. One option to consider are hubs and sticks from Bell with an Internet-only (no voice) plan. (Dec. 2015)
  • Cell service is provided by Telus. You can use Telus (Koodo) and Bell (Solo, Virgin) on this network. The Rogers network is not recommended for local/regular use (see below for why). (Dec. 2015)
Rogers Wireless has opened limited service on Haida Gwaii, but the new offerings won't be of much importance to full-time residents as they will to existing Rogers customers visiting from off-island. Rogers entered agreements with Bell and Telus for existing customers to roam off the other two carriers' signals in certain remote areas. At no extra charge, Rogers customers can now visit the islands and have full access to send and receive phone calls, texts and data in amounts allowable under their regular plan.  The service came into effect earlier this month. Prior to this, phones on a Rogers plan couldn't receive any signal on island whatsoever.

Advice: Talk with as many local users as possible before entering into a contract, as service (especially for satellite Internet) can vary greatly depending on your location (and the time of day)
